Casual Maintenance Workers
$20.00 per hour.
Various hours as needed.
Position Summary
Reporting to the Maintenance Lead Hand, the Maintenance Workers are responsible for performing manual labour around Esquimalt Nation property, including: routine garbage collection, grounds clean up, water and wastewater sampling and maintenance, general housing maintenance, basic landscaping, office building maintenance, and other related tasks similar in scope and complexity.
Primary Responsibilities
Maintenance
- Minor building repairs;
- Removal of debris (trash, furniture/mattresses, wood, blackberry bushes etc.)
- Grass cutting, salting, garbage pickup, equipment maintenance etc.;
- Perform manual labor outdoors for extended periods of time;
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees;
- Interact courteously with community members and the public;
- Arranges furniture and equipment for the purpose of providing adequate preparations for special events;
- Operate power equipment (Lawnmowers, weedwackers, etc).
Safety Management
- Follow all established safety protocols and ensure that work is completed in accordance to policies, procedures, and record keeping requirements;
- Wear appropriate PPE for the work being performed
Departmental Collaboration
- Support various departments within the Nation (Housing, Operations, Public works) with projects as required
- Assists skilled maintenance workers/contractors with projects (e.g. transporting and/or securing materials, completing specific tasks, etc.) for the purpose of completing projects in a safe, timely and efficient manner;
Other duties as required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Values teamwork and possesses positive people management skills
- Understands and follows verbal and written instructions
- Ability to work under limited supervision
- Ability to stand and/or crouch for periods of time
- Occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 70% walking, and 30% sitting;
- Working conditions contain moderate risks which require planned safety precautions for limited periods of time;
- Physically capable of performing listed duties
- Understanding of WHMIS an asset
- Standard First Aid certification an asset
